The Spina Bifida Assocation meets the first Monday of September, October and November at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital, 235 Wealthy St. in Grand Rapids. Our meetings feature special speakers who come in to educate us on issues pertaining to
Spina Bifida.
September 22, 11:00 a.m. Annual Picnic at Hagar Park in Jenison. We will provide grilled hot dogs and hamburgers, drinks, and table service. Please bring a dish to pass. We will be eating at noon; at 1:30 we will go to Grand Lemmon Chevrolet in Coopersville for the Corvette Raffle Drawing to show our thanks and support
October 8, 7:00 pm Second Floor Conference Room at Mary Free Bed Hospital An OT addresses the important topic of skin care. The kids are encouraged to attend. Self skin care is an important step in the process of gaining independence.
November 17 - Mini conference at the Livonia Marriott/Laurel Park Place. The day will start with a continental breakfast at 8:30am and the first speaker at 9. The keynote speaker will be Jean Driscoll, well known wheelchair athlete and motivational speaker who has Spina Bifida. She was the keynote speaker at the National SBA conference this year) A panel of people with Spina Bifida and professionals to discuss transition across the ages has been lined up to share. Dr. Jack Elder, Pediatric Urologist, will talk about new treatment options. Dr. Robin, Chief of Pediatric Psychology, will talk about improving adherence your child's adherence to the medical regimen. The kids program will be next door and we have some fun events planned - we're even working on active video game room. Some of the details are still being ironed out. More details will follow as available. There will be scholarships available for those of our WMSBA families who wish to attend. Please contact us for details.
